About Jon

Jon Chilling

Jon’s career in adventure sport began at 13 when he took up Kayaking. Ever since, he has relentlessly pursued a passion with anything adventure! His passion for surfing began in 1992 when he learned to surf whilst on many surf trips to Lahinch in Co. Clare.

Back then, Surfing was a sub culture, a minority sport. Over the years Jon took up windsurfing, mountain Biking and developed his Kayaking skills and qualifications to become one of Irelands best known and most experienced Kayak Instructors. He has lead many successful trips to the Alps, Himalayas, Pyrenee’s and Africa. Jon's sense of adventure has spanned a long outdoor career that has centered around bringing adventure into peoples lives. His reputation for running these activities in a professional, safe & challenging mannor is widely respected.

Jon Surfing at Dawn

Alayne & Jon settled in West Cork in 2002 after getting married and set up a very successful sea kayaking school in Kinsale. They then set up a small surf business in Garretstown in 2004. Jon soon realised that they were offering something that people really wanted. So Gtown was born! Gtown Surf School is the original and number one surf School at Garrettstown and Jon is involved many aspects of local community work. Jon & Alayne also have 2 children Aoife (3) & Sinead (1) whom are both showing promising signs of love for water.

Jon Surfing - Summer 08

In Summer 2008 Jon was part of the founding group who set up, Surf 2 Heal, which has dedicated itself to bringing Irish Children with Autism Surfing. They held their 1st weeklong camp in August which received Nationwide coverage in all aspects of the media. 43 Children from all over Ireland enjoyed working with a highly trained group of Surf volunteers and learned so much about surfing, working with other people and creating a memory for life.

Check out more about Surf 2 Heal here.
