This last weekend saw the hosting of our Junior Surf Clubs "Surfer of the year awards". We were blessed with some great surf conditions and winter sunshine on Sunday morning. We all got out for a decent surf session and some Coaching for a couple of hours.
The club has experienced some fantastic growth and development and is now in its 2nd season of existence. With close to 50 Cork area based teenagers participating regularly and enjoying Shortboarding, Longboarding & Bodyboarding. The club's ethos is simple really, to develop young people's surfing skills in a positive environment with respect to the ocean and others.
In particular we would like to say thank you to all the parents of club members for their support and commitment. Local Surf shops Incide Surf Store (Cork city) & Offshore Kinsale have been a great support to the club with sponsorship, prizes and expert advice to club members. A special thank you to al the surf club coaches who's enthusiasm, expertise and commitment has facilitated many members development and learning.
Junior "Male Surfer of the year" award went to Aaron Young. This great 15 year old surfer has been in the club from the start and is always good humoured in the water, safety concious, friendly and he enjoys all the surf disciplines. His skill as a surfer has really come on in 2010 and 2011 promises to be a great year for him! Congratulations Aaron and a big shout out to his biggest fans, Mom Amanda & little Sister Martha.
Junior "Female Surfer of the year" went to Rachel Cahalane(16). What a year 2010 turned out to be for Rachel. She had already shown a natural ability for body boarding and had received some great support & encouragement at the early season events of 2010. So much so that she qualified for the Irish Junior Surf Team in 2010. She went on to represent Ireland at the European Junior Surf championships in Portugal where she cam a creditable 5th. A great result in her first big event!
We also had a special prize for best newcomer which went to Ben Hunt for his excellent performance in the water every time he surfs! Keep it up Ben.
A big Well done to all other club members who have been dedicated and surfed so well, often in cold conditions. Your spirit and enthusiasm in Surfing will bring many years of surfing happiness.
