This Autumn has seen a great development for the future of Cork Surfing. Having spent every Summer for the last 5 years running Surf Camps for young people from the locality and Cork city, Jon Hynes has seen some fantastic aw surfing talent. However this wasnt always resulting in these oung people progressing once school kicks back in. With this challenge in mind, Jon designed and set up a Surf Club specifically for teenagers whereby they can join with their basic skills and avail of customised and specific Coaching programs further their surfing skills.
This Autumn Jon and his team have offered all members an opportunity to try the many different appects of this great Sport. They have tried Longboarding, shortboarding, Bodyboarding, worked on a whole range of skills, such as water safety, tides, fitness and etiquette on the water. The program has been a resoundin success and also has acted as a valuable social outlet for these teenagers where they have formed new friendships and developed healthier lifestyles. Surfing can teach a young person so much in terms of valuable lifeskills.
In particular a core group of member have really begun to progress. During the October mid term, Irish Body Boarding Champion and recent European Bronze medallist Ashleigh Smith came to Gtown Surf School to run a more Advanced program of Body Boarding skills and she was amazed at the talt within the club. These young rippers are now capable of getting out back in decent sized waves and ripping it up! Even pulling cleanspins and Barrel rolls! The plan is to continue offering fun based Coaching programs throughout the winter with a view to preparing ateam of Juniors to attend a calendar of Nationwide Surf Competitions next year.
