GTown Surf School

After a long and fruitful season, Jon Hynes, owner of Gtown Surf school took some time out and visited one of the worlds premier Surfing destinations, Bali. Indonesia. After a gruelling 3 flights and 27 hours of travelling he touched down there in early November and was welcomed by 30 degree heat and perfect waves lighting up many of its famed surf spots.

Having hooked up with some other surfers there he quickly set about clocking off as many surf sessions as possible during his stay. Surfing there is a very warm experience as there is no need for wetsuits, boardshorts will do just fine. However sun protection is essential, the strength of the sun is such that if your surf unprotected you will very quickly find yourself cooking!

The waves there are wide and varied, if you wanna nice mellow beginners wave, wl they can be found in abundance but if you are there looking for fast hollow short board waves then ou will quickly find yourself in heaven! Jon brought 2 boards (Thankfully,hey survived the flights!), a 6'6 Black beauty and a 6'2@ JC "El Quattro". The 6'2 received most usage and Jon was delighted with ts performance. He also used a Go Pro Hero surf camera (Check out the video below!).

The daily routine ran something like this. Wake around 5 or 6, straight in for a dawn surf for a couple of hours then back for a breakfast of esh juices and the worlds best banana pancakes! Sometimes a light breeze would kick in the middle of the day which would take the edge of the waves slightly but like clocwork this would fade late every afternoon and another dusk session would be enjoyed. He also travelled far and wide to many lesser known spots.

One of the standout highlights of the trip was a boat trip to the Island of Nusa Lembongan. Here the crowds are virtually non existent and thaid back isalnd life couples nicely with uncrowded breaks, Jon really enjoyed the famed reef break of Shipwrecks.

This razor sharp live coral reef break throws up perfect peeling righthanders that really is for experienced surfers only. Back on the mainland Jon also surfed the world renowned break of Ulluwatu, which starts by having to desen through a cave before paddling out onto a range of world class peaks, take your pick. The perfect lefthanders of Balangan also provided some memorable surf sessions, Jon thinks he has found his perfect retirement wave here!

The people of Bali have to be mentioned as there warmth & hospitality is amazing. On the water, the local surfers are an example to all surfers. They ge respect and automatically gain it! They surf at a really high standard and are very proud of their world class surfing environment.

So, now its back to the cold climate of the North Atlantic for Jon but you can be sure he is planning his net trip asap!
